Top 5 Moves to Watch for Manchester United this Summer-Louis Schaefer

Top 5 Moves to Watch for Manchester United this Summer-Louis Schaefer

Manchester United is the equivalent of the New York Yankees when it comes to being able to bring in any player they want.  Money is no object and Manchester United is always tied to the biggest names in soccer and the potential for them to come and play in Old Trafford.  In this article we will cover some of the top names that could be making their way to Manchester with eyes on playing for Jose Mourinho as well as players that could be heading elsewhere.

1.Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been one of the more pleasant surprises in the recent history of Manchester United.  After coming over to the club as a free agent last summer from Paris Saint-Germain, Ibrahimovic scored twenty eight goals this season for Manchester United before suffering a season ending knee injury on April 20th in a match against Anderlecht.  With that said, Ibrahimovic still has eyes, even at thirty five years old, of playing soccer again next season.  The question that will linger over him will be, where?  His contract that he signed over the summer expires after this season and while the club has opened the door for Zlatan to rehabilitate his knee injury in Manchester, it is zlatanbelieved that Ibrahimovic has eyes on coming to America to play in Major League Soccer.  Since not having a marquee player since Steven Gerrard’s departure after the 2016
season, it is believed that the Los Angeles Galaxy could make a run for Ibrahimovic’s striking ability.  It is hard to believe that this would not be a fit as the MLS is still in need of star power despite having teams pull in David Villa, Kaka, and Nicolás Lodeiro in recent years and Ibrahimovic, along with his personality, would certainly provide that.  This is then paired with the reports that the Galaxy are ready to make Ibrahimovic the MLS’ highest paid player along with Jose Mourinho’s reluctance to “beg” for players to return and it seems as though the writing is on the wall for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to leave Manchester United and head to Los Angeles to play for the Galaxy.

2. David De Gea

Yet again we have another player that will have his name tied to potentially leaving Manchester United this summer.  De Gea, who is widely considered to be one of, if not the best goalkeeper in world soccer, has had his name in talks with Real Madrid about a potential transfer.  The move would allow for De Gea, who is from Madrid, to return home and continue his career, similar to what LeBron James did in the NBA returning to Cleveland.  De Gea even spent two years with de geaAtlético Madrid before coming to Manchester United in 2011.  This move would be not just De Gea coming home, but also moving to the significantly better club, as he will be teammates with Cristiano Ronaldo.  However, it seems as though this move be on the back burner for a while for Real Madrid.  After an initial message from De Gea to a former teammate that is still with Atlético Madrid that stated they would beat Real Madrid, it rubbed the club the wrong way.  That is coupled with the reports that surfaced on May 2nd that stated that Jose Mourinho would take time to discuss De Gea’s future with Manchester United with him after the season’s conclusion.  It was also reported that at the moment, Manchester United has absolutely no intention of moving on from De Gea.  Regardless, this should be an interesting storyline to follow over the summer as Mourinho and Manchester United try to figure out the future and whether that future will include David De Gea.

3.Neymar

Here is the type of blockbuster move that a club like Manchester United is capable of.  A player the caliber of Neymar is not just a replacement if Zlatan Ibrahimovic potentially departs the club, he is a massive upgrade.  Neymar is the type of signing that can put Manchester United back at the top of the table with a club like Chelsea.  Obviously, Neymar would come at a hefty price, there have been reports that link Manchester United to a potential £173 Million price tag for United to acquire the Brazilian forward Barcelona.  Additionally, club manager Jose Mourinho has stated that the report was “absurd” and that he would not burden Manchester United with a financial task such as that.  In lieu of not “wanting” Neymar, Jose Mourinho has been linked to Antoine NeymarGriezmann of Atlético Madrid as the top priority for Manchester United this summer at forward.  However, if writing about sports has taught me anything, it is when to be able to smell a smokescreen from a team, and this seems just like it.  For example, in 2009 the New York Yankees were linked to bringing Derek Lowe to New York before ultimately signing C.C. Sabathia.  This move for United seems just like that.  Jose Mourniho is going to put out smoke screens to make it seem like they have no interest in bring Neymar to Old Trafford, but the teams will discuss it and, once the pieces begin to fall in place, Neymar could get closer and closer to coming to Manchester United.  Regardless, like the other two player above, this will certainly be the most interesting storyline to follow this summer in terms of a player coming in to play for Manchester United instead of trying to leave.

4.Kasper Schmeichel

This move is a clear counter move to the rumors that are swirling around David De Gea.  The Leicester City goalkeeper has been linked to both Manchester United and Manchester City in the time leading up to the transfer window, with the latest reports saying that United has jumped ahead of City in the race for Schmeichel’s services.  schmeichelUltimately, however, Manchester United does not have a need for Schmeichel is De Gea returns to the club next season.  If he doesn’t however, it is always good to have a back up plan when you have as many financial assets as Manchester United possesses.  This should be an interesting acquisition storyline to follow just because if he is acquired, it is clear that it means De Gea will be heading home to Real Madrid as mentioned previously.

5.Wayne Rooney

These transfer rumors are something that fans of Manchester United are very reluctant to talk about.  The potential for the captain of the club and the all time leading goal scorer playing somewhere else is a haunting vision for fans of United.  The fact of the matter is that Rooney’s age is beginning to show in his game.  He has lost a step, as all older players will, and it may be time for Manchester United to look to get something forrooney him.  Earlier in the season, there were rumors that Manchester United was working on a transfer to send Rooney to the Chinese Super League before the wheels ultimately fell off of the deal.  Now, very recently Wayne Rooney has been tied to a transfer that would send him back to where it all started for him, Everton.  The fact of the matter is that Manchester United is starting to plan for life without Wayne Rooney, and it is very possible that this could occur this summer.  It is not something that fans of Manchester United or Jose Mourinho for that matter want to hear, but the fact of the matter is that Manchester United is primed to make major strides towards the top of the Premier League table next season with names such as Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba returning.  Couple that with potentially having David De Gea return and Neymar joining the club, there is just no place for the captain to play, and it is certainly time for Manchester United to begin shopping Rooney elsewhere.

Manchester United Weekly Release (April 13-20) – Tim Hofmeister

Manchester United Gets Huge Win Over Chelsea

United looked like the top team in the Premier League on Easter sunday as they dominated Chelsea and won 2-0. Juan Mata was still out with an injury and Jose Mourinho decided not to start Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Ibrahimovic was sat out to rest as Mourinho reported he was tired and he would protect him. However, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford each played a great game and United got the most exciting win of the season.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic may be on the Move to the United States

Los Angeles FC will reportedly try and make a huge splash and offer Ibrahimovic $5 million to be their star. LA FC said they would loan Ibrahimovic to the Premier League for the first half of the season. According to Ian Ladyman of the Daily Mail, “LAFC are confident no team can match their unique offer for the 35-year-old, which would allow him to stay in Manchester to start next season before travelling to the United States ahead of the 2018 MLS campaign.” The LA FC offer would make Ibrahimovic the highest paid MLS players.

Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Juan Mata will not Play Again this Month

Before the match against Chelsea, Jose Mourinho gave an injury update. He revealed that Jones, Smalling, and Mata would be out at least another month. Jones and Smalling could be back in time for the final three Premier League game whereas Mata’s season is most likely done. Mourinho commented on the defensive situation “There is nothing I can do [about the current defensive situation],” he said. “They [Bailly and Rojo] have to go until the limits. There is no other choice. We don’t have any other central defenders. They have to go. There is no other chance.

David De Gea Makes RFA Team of the Year

De Gea is the only United player to make the roster and it is his third straight season in and the fourth time in the past five years. De Gea continues to rack of the accolades which will make it tough for United to retain him during the transfer window. Since the start of last season De Gea has kept more Premier League clean sheets, 27, than any other keeper since the start of last season.

Coming off a huge win against Chelsea United will face Anderlecht in the Europa League Quarter FInal at 3:05 Eastern time today. However, Mourinho is thinking much bigger as he is already talking about making the final. It will be the perfect finale for Manchester United.” This game could be headlined by the return of Wayne Rooney and Argentina keeper Sergio Romero will start ahead of David de Gea.

Living Up To Sir Alex Ferguson- Tim Hofmeister

Tim Hofmeister is a senior at DeSales University, Follow him on twitter @DontHassel_Hof

From 1987-2013 Manchester United was a dominant force and won 13 Premier League titles, 10 Community Shields, 5 FA Cups, 2 Champions Leagues. Ferguson managed 1,500 matches and had a record of 895 wins, 338 draws, and 267 losses. However, since Ferguson moved on United has struggled. They have a combined 58 wins, 26 draws, and 30 losses with finishes at 7th, 4th, and 5th, respectively.

In the 4 seasons after Ferguson departed United has employed 3 managers: David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho as well as 1 player manager: Ryan Giggs. According to Luke Edwards of the Telegraph “After Giggs final match he admitted to breaking down in tears, in part due to the pressure of managing United, and also said he had struggled to sleep during the period.”

Managing United carries huge pressure and huge expectations because of the massive amount of success Ferguson achieved. Every candidate for manager or current manager is compared to the great Sir Alex Ferguson. The fans, the media and even ownership reflect the pressure and expectations. The Glazer family carries blame for their lack of patience, as they have a quick trigger with managers. Since they have little patience, managers do not have time to create a culture or get players that fit their style of play.

Current manager Mourinho has had success in his first season being the first United manager to win a major trophy in his debut season. He is also popular with the players especially Spanish speaking players’: David de Gea, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Sergio Romero, and Eric Bailly. However, Mourinho has had some issues especially with players Luke Shaw and Bastian Schweinsteiger. According to the Manchester Evening News, Shaw and Mourinho had a heated exchange after he substituted him against Watford and publicly blamed the left-back for the home team’s second goal after the Reds’ 3-1 defeat. Schweinsteiger on the other hand was on the outs with Mourinho from the start. Schweinsteiger was sent down to the U23 team to train and made only one start for United. Current Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan and retired Chelsea star Michael Ballack both were outspoken about Schweinsteiger mistreatment and called it “disrespectful” and believe the German star deserved better.

Mourinho commented on the scenario ““Bastian is in the category of players that I feel sorry for something that I did to him,” the United manager continued “I want to speak about him as a human being and that was the last thing I told him before he left, ‘I was not right with you once, I have to be right to you now.’ So, when he was asking me to let him leave, I had to say, ‘Yes, you can leave,’ because I did it once, I cannot do it twice. So I feel sorry for the first period with him. He knows that.”

Schweinsteiger responded, after a 1-0 defeat of the Columbus Crew, “He spoke to me, so it was nothing new for me, but it shows his character.”

Although the situation was not handled the best, the fact that Mourinho publicly apologized about the situation does show character as Schweinsteiger himself said.

Mourinho has not had the best season in terms of United standards but the most important man in United history has his back. Ferguson told SiriusXM FC “I get on well with Jose and think he’s doing a really good job. He’s been a bit unlucky actually because there are home games this season they’ve been absolutely brilliant in but have drawn them. If they’d got those wins they deserved they’d be challenging for the league, there’s no doubt about that.”

Ferguson continued on Mourinho’s success “Winning a trophy at United is the most important thing, that’s what the club’s history is about — winning trophies.” Sir Alex continued “I looked upon the League Cup as the manager [Mourinho] does: this is an important trophy. I was fortunate to win it four times. It doesn’t matter what the trophy is, if you get to a final you want to win it.”

Fans and the media cannot talk about United without comparing every lineup change, transfer, or strategy without comparing it to Ferguson during his time at the helm. Former player and manager Paul Mariner of ESPN FC talked about the “Manchester United Way” and he compared and contrasted the defensive strategy of Mourinho and Ferguson. However, this is part of the problem because no two coaches are alike and although fans, the media, and ownership want a carbon copy of Ferguson they most likely will never find one.

It is a new era in United history and although they want to repeat the past it should only be repeated in the amount of success not so much the same style of play. However, repeating the success does not just fall on Mourinho’s shoulders but falls on ownership as well. During Ferguson’s reign United featured stars such as: David Beckham, Cristiano Rinaldo, Ryan Giggs, Mark Hughes, Roy Keane, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær to name a few. However, Mourinho has old players like Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and formally Schweinsteiger which would have been a great lineup 5 years ago. Even though Ibrahimovic is having an amazing season he cannot carry a team, especially in arguably the best football leagues in the world.

However, it is time to make for United to make a huge splash that they are known for. Names on the transfer rumor mill include stars such as Neymar, Alvaro Morata, Jordi Alba, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Djibril Sidibe and Benjamin Mendy are just some names out there that have been connected to United. Mourinho hopes to be given around 250 million for the transfer window but it may be smart of the Glazer family to give him more.

Obviously a player Neymar is going to command a ton but getting a player of his caliber at a young age would pay dividends and most likely make United the favorite in the EPL. This transfer window is the most important on Mourinho has been apart of because it will start the transition of a new era of United.

Until Mourinho wins consistently and gets back to the top of the table and in the Champions League the United fans and media will not be able to stop looking in past at what was. It is up to Mourinho, with help of ownership, to get United fans excited for the present and future, but that can only be done through a culture change and top notch players.
