On Saturday, Tottenham faced Chelsea in the English Football Association (FA) Cup semifinals. Tottenham fell to Chelsea by a score of 4-2. The scoring started early when in the fifth minute Chelsea midfielder Willian curled in a free kick from just outside of the 18 yard box. Chelsea earned the free kick when Pedro was taken down by Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld, who given a yellow card for the challenge. Tottenham would equalize the game in the 18th minute when a low cross was sent into the near post by Christian Erikson and Harry Kane was there for the diving header. The game would remained tied until the 42nd minute when Willian would convert a penalty after Victor Moses was taken down in the box by Son Heung-min. Chelsea would take the 2-1 lead into half.
Tottenham would again tie the game up when Erikson again sent the ball into the box, but this time Dele Alli was there to make a sliding volley and hammer the ball past Chelsea Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the 52nd minute. What would prove to be a defining moment in the match was when Chelsea brought in stars Eden Hazard and Diego Costa from the substitutes in the 60th minute. In the 75th minute substitute Hazard would put his stamp on the game putting Chelsea ahead when a poor clearance by Tottenham off of a corner fell right to the feet of Hazard who took one dribble and fired a low shot across the box passed an outstretched Hugo Lloris. Just five minutes later Chelsea would get their fourth and final goal when Nemanja Matic struck a shot from over 25 yards away into the top corner.
Tottenham resumed Premier League action on Wednesday when they traveled to Crystal Palace. Tottenham was not in top form for this match as they struggled to create any chances. It would remain tied at zero all through the first and most of the second half. The lone goal of the game came in the 78th minute when Erikson received a pass from Kane took two touches and took a shot from 25 yards out bouncing past the diving Crystal Palace goalkeeper.
On Sunday, the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) awards were handed out. Among the winners were Alli who won the PFA Young Player of the Year award. This is Alli’s second consecutive season winning the award. This award is given to the best player under the age of 23 when the season begins. He is the only the fourth person to ever win the award in consecutive years. This is also the third consecutive year that a player from Tottenham has won the award. In 2014-15 Kane won the award followed by consecutive wins by Alli. Another award that was given out was the PFA Premier League Team of the Year. Four players from Tottenham were awarded to this team. Named to this team along with Alli was Kane and defenders Kyle Walker and Danny Rose.
With their Premier League win against Crystal Palace it increased their winning streak in the league to eight games. They remain four points behind Chelsea as they gear up for the battle of North London. Tottenham will host the match against Arsenal at White Hart Lane. With five games remaining they need to keep winning to put more pressure on the league leaders to win.
